Technology ethics lecture series 2022

We look at technology ethics in a philosophical and practical sense. Ethics is neither a burden nor a painful additional task for us, but a helpful tool in research and product development.

Over the last year we have looked at ethics, tech ethics in general, their importance and benefits. This year we will cover sub-areas that are either closely related to our practical work or whose importance is of global importance.

The events can be attended individually. We talk to you and about:

1. Consumption and Energy

"More from less" or "More with less"? Does a successful life require a lot of consumption and a lot of energy? If so, who will do without it in the future? People do not like to talk about distribution issues, winners and losers, and so ethical questions and the difficult answers to them are very important reasons why a positive ecological balance and the energy transition are so difficult to achieve.

2. Social Score - Social Credit Systems

The good Lord sees everything - the tech companies even more: Observing, recording, sorting and evaluating is almost seamless. Comprehensive surveillance is already here! China wants to use it like no other country for successful social behavior and a successful state. We look at these and similar efforts and discuss opportunities, threats and acceptance criteria for Germany and Europe.

3. Machine and robot ethics

So far, ethics has only referred to the morality of people. Now we also need moral algorithms, machines and robots. What morals does a machine need? What morals do we have towards machines? It may sound very philosophical, but it is already of the highest practical relevance on a daily basis. With search engines and everything we call AI. Anyone who has never heard of bias in AI and programmed prejudices should come to this theme day.

4. Hacker ethics and blockchain ethics

The hacker ethic refers to a collection of ethical values such as freedom, cooperation, voluntary and self-chosen work and sharing. Open-source software is also supported by these values, so hacker ethics are more important than their lurid name might suggest. The blockchain goes even further, which many consider to be a completely new form of democracy in which everyone can participate and benefit. Do we want to be sovereign or become again? What is the price for this?

5. Virtual Ethics - AR/VR/Metaverse

If sociologists and psychologists look at our behavior in the modern technological world, they see many disadvantages. The personal is devalued, basic social values and interpersonal aspects decline. Do we brutalize and become stupid in virtual and artificial worlds? Yes, and to a large extent. However, we can also use the augmented and artificial reality privately and at work and develop positively and clearly: moral and ethical guidelines are a key.

6. AI in security, justice and military

Machines make the difference between happiness and woe - and unfortunately often unnoticed, opaque and more bad than right. When it comes to justice and the military, it is a matter of life and death in an emergency. Opponents and supporters of the technology are directly opposed to each other. Let's celebrate the conclusion of our series and talk about the topics that everyone - including ourselves - would like to sweep under the table. We pack a large number of ethical dilemmas on top of that. "War is killing."

Tue, December 6, 2022
17:00 – 19:30 CEST
online event

We present the topics with keynote speeches. Youse's colleagues offer a practical discussion with ELSI workshops. The series is hosted and organized by WvSC eV
